Nissan began selling the Silvia in the United States in 1976, with Datsun 200SX badging for added "SX Appeal." A couple of Silvia generations later, the slick-looking S12 version debuted here for the 1984 model year. Here's a magazine advertisement for that car, featuring the preferred spelling of the most important word of the 1980s.
Of course, Mitsubishi managed to out-T-U-R-R-R-R-B-O Nissan on our shores, because every single Mitsubishi model offered here that year could be had with turbocharging (yes, including the Mighty Max pickup). But still, Nissan's 200SX T-U-R-R-R-R-B-O looked just as cool as any Cordia, and it had rear-wheel drive as well.
