At the other end of the scale will be SUVs with their popularity continuing to soar. Alfa Romeo is among those planning on launching new SUVs in 2020 to compete in the already highly competitive market.

Alfa Romeo baby SUV

Alfa Romeo will bolster its line-up with a baby SUV to compete with the Volvo XC40 and BMW X1. It’s yet to be named, but is likely to use a shortened version of the Giorgio platform that underpins the Giulia saloon and Stelvio SUV. Previewed by our exclusive image, the SUV is expected to be rear-wheel drive, with an option for four-wheel drive. Level 3 autonomous tech and electrified powertrains are also expected, with petrol-electric hybrid set-ups replacing Alfa Romeo’s discontinued diesel engines.

Alfa Romeo Grand SUV

Price: From £50,000 (est)
On sale: 2020

In a push for market expansion, Alfa Romeo is launching a large SUV. Our exclusive image previews the Audi Q7 rival, which is likely to feature a performance-focused 400bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain, with engineers promising an all-electric range of 32 miles and a 0-62mph time of under five seconds. Based on the Stelvio’s underpinnings, the large SUV will be around 200kg heavier than its little sister due to the longer wheelbase and bigger body. It’s also likely to be offered with the option of seven seats.
