Jaguar has created a new virtual concept car for the Gran Turismo Sport PlayStation game
This is the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo: a dramatic concept that won’t make it to a physical road, but a virtual one. That’s because Jaguar’s latest design will be available to race in the PlayStation 4 driving title Gran Turismo Sport.
The low, sleek styling takes inspiration from Jaguar’s past motorsport icons, the C-Type and D-Type Le Mans racers of the 1950s. The most notable nods to those classics are the wrap-around windscreen and curvaceous wheel arches, though the Vision GT does also sport a sculpted coupe body. Aerodynamic downforce is controlled by a pop-out rear spoiler, which emerges and then slides outwards from between the slim tail lights.
The entire front clamshell opens up to reveal a cabin that’s stripped of all but the essentials. The wraparound cockpit takes further inspiration from the D-Type, while a digital instrument panel displays both three-dimensional gauges – mimicking the Smiths clocks fitted to previous Jaguar Le Mans winners – and images relayed from the car’s rear view cameras.
The drivetrain is pure fantasy, Jaguar says that the concept is powered by a triple electric motor setup that produces 1,006bhp and 1,200Nm of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels so that, should you press the X button on your Playstaton’s DualShock controller hard enough, it’ll achieve a sub two-second 0-62mph time and max out at over 200mph.
Jaguar is the latest in a long list of brands to create a concepts for the digital world of Gran Turismo: Mercedes was the first to create a Vision GT car back in 2013, while other marques like Bugatti, Hyundai and MINI have all produced concepts previously.
Buyers of Gran Turismo Sport will get the first chance to drive the Jaguar Vision GT in a round of game updates due in late November. The first to experience the new concept will be the competitors in the FIA-backed Sony Gran Turismo World Tour event, which sees its latest round take place in Tokyo on 26-27 October.
