Just 25 examples of the Aston Martin DB5 will be made and will cost collectors £2.75m each, but they won’t be road legal
James Bond’s gadget-laden silver Aston Martin DB5 from the 1964 Goldfinger movie is arguably the most iconic machine in the British marque’s history. Now Aston Martin has announced plans to build 28 brand new Goldfinger ‘continuation’ cars.
Each example will be an authentic reproduction from the ground up of the 007 movie car, with the same 282bhp straight six engine giving a top speed of 148mph and 0-60mph in 7.1 seconds.

They will also be equipped with a full set of functional James Bond-style gadgets, although the cars will be priced at an eye-watering £2.75 million apiece.
Construction will begin next year at Aston Martin Works, the firm’s coachbuilding and restoration arm based in Newport Pagnell, and the birthplace of the original DB5. The project is a joint venture with the James Bond rights holder EON Productions, and the working gadgets will be developed not by Q Branch, but with the help of Oscar-winning special effects guru Chris Corbauld.
Unlike Jaguar with its recent XKSS continuation, Aston doesn’t have a list of unused DB5 chassis numbers registered that it hasn’t got round to building yet. So in the eyes of the law the Goldfinger DB5s would have to meet 2019 vehicle standards to be road legal.

However, that’s unlikely to deter a host of super-rich collectors from vying for the chance to get their hands on one of the 25 examples Aston intends to offer for sale. “No orders have been taken, but we expect significant interest in the project and for it to be sold out very shortly,” Aston Martin told us.
Aston intends to keep one of the three remaining Goldfinger DB5s for itself, while another will be kept by EON Productions. The final car will be offered at auction for charity – so how much would you bid?
