Mercedes set to unveil radical EQ Silver Arrow showcar with retro-futuristic styling and potent electric powertrain
Mercedes will present a new showcar at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concors d’Elegance, which will likely be an all-electric, retro-futuristic racing car inspired by the firm’s Formula 1 cars of the 1930s.
The latest teaser for the vehicle comes from Merc’s Chief design officer, Gorden Wagener. An Instagram post from the executive confirms that the concept will use the name EQ Silver Arrow, again strongly suggesting that it’s an electric take on some of the firm’s classic single seater racers.

The video clip shared by Wagener on social media shows little detail, but we can make out a long bonnet, a sleek, bubble-like cockpit, a sloping rear end with a tail fin and pronounced haunches where the rear wheels will sit.
An earlier teaser from the designer tentatively hinted at the car’s shape in sketch form, again suggesting that it’s a classic racer re-interpreted as a modern EV single seater.
It’s highly unlikely that the EQ Silver Arrow will inform any upcoming production model, though it could arrive as a showcase for future Mercedes electric propulsion technology, with a particular focus on high-performance powertrains for future electrified AMG products.
The first fully-electric car to be released under Merc’s new EQ sub-brand is likely to appear at the Paris Motor Show this October, in the form of the EQC SUV. A rival for the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace and also set to square off against the upcoming Audi e-tron and BMW iX3, it’ll be followed by a compact EV called EQA in 2020.
